The Manchester
Police Department Bicycle Patrol Unit was formed during 2004, the only active police bike unit in Adams County Ohio, to create
an innovative patrol assignment that redefined foot patrol functions in a manner that developed a more visible police presence,
enhanced mobility, increased productivity while perpetuating our commitment to community relations.
We are particularly proud of our Bike Unit
which draws its members from the regular and reserve patrol officers. All bike officers receive bike patrol training and recertification
which includes a variety of disciplines included bike handling, 'take down' maneuvers, response techniques, etc., thru The
International Police Mountain Bike Association.
The Bike Unit consists of patrol officers
and supervisors designated by the Chief of Police and equipped with Trek bicycles, specially equipped duty bags, and other
equipment as needed.
The Bike Unit is utilized whenever weather
permits. They ride from early spring thru late fall. The main focus of the unit is the 'downtown' business district, neighborhoods
and park areas. Bike Units are also deployed for special assignment in wooded areas and outlying sections of Town. Bike Units
are also deployed for several public events throughout the year including: parades, carnivals, Police Bicycle Safety Day,
street fairs, bike races, motorcycle events, and essentially any event that would benefit from their presence.
